Free and Open Source (FOSS) 2006/07 Print

Free and Open SourceThis project closed in February 2007 The knowledge and expertise gained as a part of the project is now vailable as a part of our portfolio of services.

Interim Findings

The project threw up some interesting results.

  • There is little difference in planning and installing an Open Source solution compared to Microsoft in a voluntary sector organisation.
  • There is a great reluctance to use and ignorance in relation to FOSS and its capabilities.
  • FOSS does the job equally as well , so why do only a few choose to use it?

Our findings can now be found in our Open Source Closure Report feel free to view or download this document (Attached to the bottom of this page).

What is FOSS?

Open Source refers to free to obtain software that provides an alternative to Microsoft products such as Word, Excel and particularly server technologies such as Server 2003. Free does not imply that there is no other costs, e.g. installation, support, etc.

Why Use Open Source?

Almost every program you buy for your PC (including the Windows Operating System) adds additional costs to your organisation. OS products reduce these costs, in many cases are free and perform the same function as the Microsoft alternative.
